Choosing an image format
Understand common image formats and choose a practical format for photographs, transparent graphics and website images.
JPEG for photographs
JPEG is widely supported and often works well for photographs. It uses lossy compression, so repeated editing and saving can reduce image quality.
PNG for transparency and sharp edges
PNG supports lossless compression and transparency. It is often useful for logos, interface graphics and images with crisp edges, although files can be larger than equivalent JPEGs.
WebP for web delivery
WebP supports lossy and lossless compression and transparency. It can be efficient for websites, but check compatibility with the software and workflow that will use the image.
Resize before optimizing
If an image will only appear at a small display size, reducing its pixel dimensions can lower file size significantly. Keep a full-resolution original for future editing.
