How to compress a PDF carefully

Learn what PDF compression changes, when image-based compression is useful, and how to check the output before sharing it.

1. Check the original file

Note the original file size and open the PDF to confirm that every page displays correctly. If the document contains forms, selectable text, links, signatures or accessibility structure, keep an untouched original.

2. Choose the right method

Image-heavy scans may benefit from image compression or reduced resolution. Text-based documents may not shrink much without changing their contents. Image-based compression can turn pages into pictures and remove selectable text and interactive elements.

3. Compare quality and size

After compression, compare the new file size with the original. Zoom in on small text, inspect diagrams and check pages with fine detail. A smaller file is not automatically a better file.

4. Keep an original copy

Save the compressed copy under a new name. For legal, business, archival or accessibility-sensitive documents, confirm that the output meets the applicable requirements before replacing the original.
