How to choose YouTube tags

Learn how to brainstorm accurate YouTube tags, avoid irrelevant keywords and use tags as one small part of video metadata.

Start with the actual video topic

Write down the main subject, names, product terms or concepts that genuinely appear in the video. Use clear phrases rather than unrelated high-volume keywords.

Include useful variations

Consider common spelling variations, abbreviations or alternate names when they help viewers understand the topic. Avoid repeating the same phrase in many slightly different forms.

Keep metadata accurate

Do not add trending topics, competitor names or popular keywords that do not describe the video. Misleading metadata can frustrate viewers and weaken trust.

Prioritize the whole viewing experience

A clear title, accurate description, useful thumbnail and satisfying video matter. Tags are only one metadata signal and do not guarantee rankings or views.
